From the renowned coming-of-age auteur, Oshimi Shuzo, comes one of his earliest explorations of puberty and sexuality, long before the critical acclaim of Aku no Hana (The Flowers of Evil). Originally released in Japan in 2004, Oshimi explores puberty and coming-of-age through his blend of sincere romance and deliberately uncomfortable situations in Sweet Poolside. Sweet Poolside follows two middle school swimming students struggling with opposite problems of puberty. Toshihiko Ota is mocked by his peers for having a hairless body, while Ayako Goto is ashamed of having too much hair on her body. An endearing story about marriage and craftsmanship comes our way in the form of Cuprum no Hanayome (The Coppersmith’s Bride). College freshman Shiina is enjoying her cozy life in Tsubame-Sanjo, a town full of craftsmen, dating her coppersmith boyfriend, Shuu. Everything is going well, but when Shuu proposes to Shiina out of nowhere, she involuntarily runs away! She’s barely out of high school—can she really consider marriage? And what does it mean to marry into a prestigious family of craftsmen?! We’ll be putting a ring on it when The Coppersmith’s Bride makes its move in early January 2023!
1. Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School)
Our most anticipated new romance manga of 2023 is the nighttime love story, Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia (Insomniacs After School). Nakami and Isaki are two complete opposites in high school. Nakami is studious but antisocial, always getting on his classmates’ nerves, while Isaki is charming and popular—but during preparations for the school festival, they discover they both suffer from insomnia. With neither of them able to sleep comfortably, this unlikely duo make a private cubby in the school’s observatory, where they can watch the stars—and maybe find the comfort and sleep they’ve been longing for. An anime adaptation of Insomniacs After School has been announced by Liden Films for release in April 2023, along with a live-action film at a later date. This sweet romance about insomnia, secrets, and star-gazing, will be keeping us up late (reading) when it arrives in March 2023!
