Whether it’s somewhere in the trenches of Reddit, scrolling through TikTok, or on the title of a youtube video meme with tough Russian music playing in the background, you’ve more than likely come across the term, “Sigma male”. So what IS a sigma male? Well, according to the internet (the birthplace of the term), a sigma male is used for a self-reliant, independent person who lives his life according to his own rules and prefers to forego the social hierarchy and need for external validation altogether. Basically, a loner. From the cool and composed Kazami Yuuji to the very cynical Hikigaya Hachiman (from Oregairu), the world of anime is abundant with many memorable figures and characters that can be attributed to the Sigma male personality and today's article will specifically be looking at some of them. Picking only 5 was one of the hardest tasks we've undertaken and plenty of favourites just missed this list, but that's the kind of sacrifice we make for you. Here are our picks for the top 5 sigma male anime characters.

    5. Guts from Berserk

    [sourceLink asin="B000657MY6" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

The horror/fantasy/action anime Berserk was set in a cruel fantasy world so horrible it makes the Game of Thrones setting look like a child's playground. Guts didn't just have a rough childhood. He had an upbringing that etched its tragedy and misfortune into every aspect of his being and no matter how he changes and develops it never stops informing who he is, and his life didn't get any easier from there. He goes through so many trials and tribulations it's hard to keep track. He sees his friends and loved ones brutalised or killed (or both), eventually losing an arm and an eye. The brutality of his mercenary lifestyle and eventual betrayals irreversibly shape Guts into the man he is. But what makes Guts a true sigma are his high principles. He was always fair and compassionate and although he just swings his big-ass sword around most of the time, he is a thoughtful person. He employs a great deal of tactical thinking in many fights, and in those sparse moments between battles Guts does a lot of talking and listening, and we see the story through the eyes of a man who has every reason to detest the world but is still fighting to protect the good in it.

    4. Koyomi Araragi from the Monogatari series

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://ift.tt/paGEM89" ]

Koyomi Araragi - the main protagonist of the Monogatari series and the most frequent narrator of the show. He is a third-year high school student who survived a vampire attack during spring break, and barely regained his human life in the time that followed. The Monogatari series is an anime adapted from a light novel written and illustrated by Nisio Isin and Vofan, respectively. Although the anime has one of the most “innocent” openings, the anime is much darker than it seems. The rest of the story revolves around the life of our main character, Koyomi Araragi, and the supernatural events that take place in his life as he tries to help the acquaintances he makes. Considering the staggering numbers, Koyomi isn’t like most anime protagonists. For starters, he has a perverted nature AND a harem (of sorts), two elements that are usually mutually exclusive. Much like most Sigma males, he avoided having friends and seemed to have lost faith and trust in people and himself. Throughout the entire series, he is also seen as someone with a sharp intellect and a mix of comedy, wit, and the glue that holds the series together. He is very noble and is almost always willing to help others at the cost of his own life. As such, the female characters he has helped are quite attached to him with most showing to have either some dark secret that they cannot let anyone in on or some traumatic past that they carry with them.

    3. Ayanokoji Kiyotaka from Classroom of the elite.

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://ift.tt/BNAkSiq" ]

As the second season of Classroom Of The Elite has fans on the edge of their seats looking forward to more of Kiyotaka Ayanokoji's intellectual undertakings, we figured he deserved the number three spot. Set in the distant future where the Japanese government has established the Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing School, dedicated to instructing and fostering the generation of people that will support the country in the future. The story follows the perspective of Kiyotaka Ayanokōji, a quiet and unassuming boy, who is not good at making friends and would rather keep his distance, but possesses unrivalled intelligence. He is a student of Class-D, which is where the school dumps its inferior students. After meeting Suzune Horikita and Kikyō Kushida, two other students in his class, the situation begins to change and he starts to get involved in many affairs, and his thought of an ideal normal high school life begins to get scattered. Perceptive, deceptive, and manipulative, Ayanokoji knows how to get what he wants without showing his hand. He allies himself with different people and uses their strong suits paired with his skills to get the best out of each situation. Albeit a mastermind, he is somewhat socially awkward, as he is terrible at communicating with people and fails at correctly associating with them. As a result, he speaks in a very monotonous way (in the anime) and tends to isolate himself from his peers, not getting involved with social activities. These traits tend to leave an impression on others that he is cunning, uncaring, breezy, and carefree, while also hinting at aloofness, latency, or generally a sense of apathy towards anything besides issues that specifically concern him.

    2. Hōtarō Oreki from Hyouka

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="crunchyroll" url="https://ift.tt/o4EACw7" ]

The plot of Hyouka follows Hotaro Oreki, a high school student who dislikes expending energy on anything, who is compelled by his older sister to join the Classic Lit Club to keep it from closing down. Chitanda Eru, Satoshi Fukube, and Mayaka Ibara, his classmates, join him as they work together to solve numerous enigmas around the school, mostly at Eru's request. Houtarou is a classical example of a sigma male if there ever was one. Apathetic, cynical, and calm. Along with his passive demeanour, he seems to always "conserve energy" and never exerts effort on anything unless absolutely necessary; thus coming off as sluggard. Also, because of his attitude, he doesn't talk much and rarely gets mad, though he does appear to get irritated often. In general, Houtarou doesn't express his emotions much. On the other hand, he is surprisingly intelligent and clever, with brilliant deduction skills that enable him to solve various mysteries. Despite this, Houtarou is capable of appreciating praise and has demonstrated a tendency to exert more effort than usual when given positive feedback.

    1. L from Death Note

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B001023JBE" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Death Note follows Light Yagami, a teen genius who discovers a mysterious notebook: the "Death Note", which belonged to the shinigami Ryuk, and grants the user the supernatural ability to kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. The series centres around Light's subsequent attempts to use the Death Note to carry out a worldwide massacre of individuals whom he deems immoral and to create a crime-free society, using the alias of a god-like vigilante named "Kira", and the subsequent efforts of an elite Japanese police task force to apprehend him. Every good lead character necessitates a challenge, and L provided the opposition that the Death Note series required to keep fans interested. He's not exactly an exceptional portrayal of a "sigma male" or "master detective," being an outcast with unkempt hair, a dislike for shoes, and a preference for crouching on chairs and eating fast food, but geniuses are often irregular, and L is a stark contrast to Light's sociopathic character and the mask of perfection he wears. His dishevelled and languid appearance conceals his great powers of deduction, and many people question his abilities when they see him. Some of his tactics are quite bold, while others seem bizarre but he is not above using subterfuge, misinformation, disinformation, and analytical knowledge of human nature to help lure a suspected murderer into a false sense of security and possibly make him carelessly over-confident.

    Final Thoughts

When all is said and done, the different facets of "sigma male" are all pretty cool with each character here being unique in their way.
