As players of MMORPGs, we’ve always hoped for a different type of MMO to exist. Rather than just be about clicking one button and watching ridiculous abilities play out, we wanted to be part of the action. Then we heard of Tower of Fantasy and while the name seems like it harkens to us otaku—it shares a similar name to Tower of God—we didn’t know what to expect from the sci-fi and fantasy-themed title. Then we were blessed to play an early release of it and wow…folks who love action titles and MMOs may want to keep reading. We present to you our review of Tower of Fantasy for the PC and to sum it up, this game is fantasy indeed.

    Anime MMO Fusion

It won’t take too long from entering the strange world of Aida, will players realize who this game is geared for. Assuming the role of either a male or female character—which is extremely customizable after the initial tutorial—you’ll set off into the world and quickly undertake various quests and tasks to learn more about your world and what dangers need to be dealt with. What’s really liberating about Tower of Fantasy is there is an absurd amount of freedom in picking your character, customizing it, equipping either a melee/ranged weapon, and tackling the narrative in your own way. Usually, MMOs make us feel the first dozen hours are tutorials meant to teach you the ropes but Tower of Fantasy removes that hook and lets you experience the world how you want to.

This Isn’t Your Typical MMO Experience

It was mentioned before but we need to hammer this in for greater effect. Tower of Fantasy isn’t your average MMORPG. We can tell there was a lot of love from titles like Genshin Impact and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild! When you aren’t trying to upgrade your character via the robust in-game mechanics, you’ll either set off alone to take down baddies or join groups for raid-like experiences. These themes might be akin to your everyday MMO but what we loved about Tower of God is the way every weapon has a reason for being necessary in a group and how your skill isn’t all just based on an order of numbered buttons to hit for a combo. Similar to games like Honkai Impact and Punishing: Gray Rave, Tower of Fantasy offers quick combat and movement that allows for timed evasions and the use of weapons varying attributes like Frost, Volt, and Physical to name a few. We also loved the Simulacra system which allows you to harness the powers of other warriors within the world of Tower of Fantasy’s lore to take their form and abilities via combat, which is akin to the character switching mechanics in Genshin Impact. You’ll find yourself wanting to try out everything in Tower of Fantasy rather than sticking to something simple for your entire experience. We won’t deny we kept trying various things to really find what we liked best.

    This Much for Free!?

MMORPGs can be quite expensive on the wallet with their subscription fees and offer what seems like a finite amount of content despite the large world you’re thrust into. Tower of Fantasy was a game we played for hours and found new areas to explore, new baddies to obliterate, and new story elements to dabble through. There are a lot of games for free and that makes this perfect for someone who might not be able to play MMOs all day and yet, still have to pay hefty fees. Tower of Fantasy is huge and we bet the developers are already hard at work thinking of more content to add in future updates!

    Fantastical Visuals

Above all else, Tower of Fantasy is a gorgeous game! While we noticed some little graphical imperfections here and there, 99% of the time, Tower of Fantasy blew our minds with stunning visuals. Environments blend fantasy and sci-fi flawlessly, character models are very detailed and enemies have a rather unique design. We can’t say if the android/iOS versions look as graphically impressive as the PC version but we can bet they come close given the power of most mobile devices nowadays.

    Final Thoughts

Tower of Fantasy is a game we have sunk some time into but have only scratched a small portion of the surface. Just like Genshin Impact or Breath of the Wild, there are so many quests to still do, so much to discover, items to nab, and things to learn that we aren’t going to be done anytime soon. Plus, with the ability to play this via PC or mobile, we can easily sink free time into Tower of Fantasy while on the go and that is pretty incredible. Needless to say, if you like anime and MMOs, then you’re going to want to download Tower of Fantasy the minute it goes live! Are you readers intrigued about Tower of Fantasy after reading our review?
