Top 10 Comedy Manga [Updated Best Recommendations]
Comedy is the medicine that we need to survive during this strange time. Everybody has their own favorite form of comedy and, as manga readers, this Japanese visual storytelling medium is the one that we turn to for our daily dose of laughter. However, as one of the most popular genres, there are just so many titles to choose from that it can get quite overwhelming for new readers. That's where this list comes in. Since it is practically impossible to fit every funny manga in a top 10 list, this list focuses on the newer titles instead. Some of them have been completed, while others are still ongoing. Some have received an anime adaptation, while others haven't. Some have been around for several years, while others were first published in 2021. As you can see, there's a wide variety of titles on this list, so it's highly likely that you'll find something that you'll like here. With that out of the way, here are the top 10 comedy manga to lighten your weary soul.
10. Mashle (Mashle: Magic and Muscles)
What would happen if Superman lived in the wizarding world of Harry Potter? Would he be cursed by a terrible spell, or would he just simply slap all of those wizards with his bare hands? That is basically the premise of Mashle: Magic and Muscles. In a world where magic rules everything, being able to do something with a flick of a wand is just a common thing that everybody can do. However, there is a boy called Mash Burnedead who has no magical ability whatsoever. Nevertheless, in exchange for his lack of magic, Mash is blessed with superhuman strength instead. Lifting several tons of weight before breakfast won't even make him break a sweat. One thing leads to another, and now he is forced to enroll into Easton Magic Academy. Needless to say, none of those scrawny wizards and witches have ever seen such absurd physical prowess before in their life. When faced with a problem that most people use magic to solve, Mash finds a solution using the sheer power of his muscles. As you can imagine, shocked faces, bizarre events, and hilarious situations ensue.
9. Sakamoto Days
Taro Sakamoto is the world's deadliest hitman. His name sends chills down the spines of his enemies. However, that fearsome Sakamoto found himself falling in love - he married the love of his life and left his old persona behind. Nowadays, Sakamoto lives as a grocery store clerk in a small town with his beloved wife and daughter. And he is also becoming fat now. Nevertheless, Sakamoto may leave the world of violence behind, but his deadly skill is still deeply engraved in his brain and body. And thus begins the adventure of Sakamoto and a young man who used to be his junior in the organization, as they tackle various mundane problems in their small town with over the top and highly intricate assassin skills.
8. Dandadan
Ken Takakura is a shy and awkward boy who believes in aliens, but not in ghosts. Ayase Momo is an easy going girl who believes in ghosts, but not in aliens. As it turns out, both of them are correct - ghosts and aliens do exist in this world. Momo is attacked by an alien that looks like a buff boxing prawn, while Takakura is chased by the ghost of Turbo Granny. Dandadan presents a superb mixture of action and supernatural elements alongside horror. However, what makes it such an interesting read is the quirky characters, whose interactions are where most of the comedy comes from. From the exaggerated expression of Momo when she first encounters the weird-looking aliens to Takakura's snarky comments to the ghost of a granny with fancy footwork, what they do and what they say are what ultimately make every reader grin from ear to ear.
7. Spy x Family
Code name: Twilight is the greatest spy in the western nation. Nobody has ever seen his face, but his abilities are well-known among the people who work in the shadows. This time around, Twilight is tasked to infiltrate an elementary school in order to gain access to one of the top officials who have the power to affect the relationship between the West and the East. In order to do that, he has to assume the name of Loid Forger and find himself a wife and a child in seven days. Against all odds, Twilight manages to find a proper wife and daughter for his mission. Unbeknownst to him, his new wife, Yor Forger, is a lethal assassin who goes by the name of Thorn Princess. Not only that, but their adopted daughter, Anya Forger, is actually a telepath who can read people's minds. There will be nothing but chaos and hysterical moments for this fake and yet quite wholesome family. That premise alone should be enough to make everybody interested to pick up Spy x Family. After all, there aren’t many manga that can offer the same kind of dynamic that combines action, comedy, and romance like Spy x Family. It will make you feel thrilled, moved, and happy all at the same time.
6. Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san (Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie)
Yuu Izumi is a boy with a weak physical disposition and unnaturally bad luck. There is not a day that goes by where he doesn't get involved in an accident of some kind. On the other hand, his girlfriend, Micchon Shikimori, is the complete opposite of Izumi. Shikimori is a beautiful and reliable girl who excels both in sports and in academics. Izumi is a kind and hardworking boy who always tries to do his best despite his physical limitations, while Shikimori is a charismatic girl who always worries about her boyfriend. She is just effortlessly cool. That's why, when they're together, Shikimori is the one who always protects Izumi. She is the gallant female knight who is always ready to save her gentleman in distress. This series manages to flip the common narrative of a strong man who always saves the lady, and it does it in a sweet and wholesome way. This unique relationship dynamic between both of them not only feels refreshing, but it is also funny and heartwarming at the same time.

5. Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon)
In a town where a mysterious dungeon with halls that sprawl into the unknown depths appears out of nowhere, countless adventurers of all kinds of species try their luck inside the dungeon in pursuit of fame and riches. Laios and his friends are just another group of adventurers who wish to explore the depths of the dungeon. Unfortunately, on one of their excursions, his sister, Falin, gets bit by a dragon while they’re being forcefully ejected out of the dungeon. So begins the misadventure of Laios and his comrades as they go through every level of the dungeon while catching, cooking, and eating every edible monster that comes across their path. The strength of Delicious in Dungeon is in the inability of the characters to control their situation. They are more than capable in what they do, but there are simply so many unknown variables in the dungeon that will eventually lead to so many terrifying and hilarious chains of events.
4. Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! (Tomo-chan Is a Girl!)
Tomo Aizawa is a competitive and boyish girl who also happens to be highly proficient in karate. Junichiro Kubota is Tomo's best friend and they’ve been competing in everything since childhood. Tomo actually has a huge crush on Jun, but unfortunately, Jun only sees Tomo as one of the guys. The whole series revolves around Tomo's attempt to steal Jun's heart, which mostly ends in disastrous and hilarious misunderstandings. Unlike the other entries on this list, Tomo-chan is a Girl is a 4-koma manga, which means it is filled to the brim with short and snappy comedy. The simple storyline and lovable characters manage to create a perfect blend of a sweet romance and side-splitting humor.
3. Grand Blue (Grand Blue Dreaming)
Iori Kitahara is a freshman college student who stumbles upon an unhinged diving club called Peek-A-Boo. The club is filled with buff drunkards who like to party and do stupid things, such as taking their clothes off in the middle of a diving shop. The story of Grand Blue is filled with hilarious pranks, crazy antics, unbelievable gags, and also random yet interesting banter. The characters are already quirky enough, but combine that with the super exagerrated expressions and you get one massive comedy bomb that will make you laugh at every turn of the page. However, underneath all of the craziness in Grand Blue, there lies a true love for the sea. There are genuinely wholesome moments scattered throughout the series, especially during the diving scenes. This combination of wholesome and hysterical moments is what makes Grand Blue such a good and satisfying read.
2. Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen (Kaguya-sama: Love is War)
Shuchiin Academy is a prestigious school where only the top of the elites may enroll. This is the birthplace of successful businessmen and influential politicians. Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane are the cream of the crop in the academy with Miyuki as the president of the student council and Kaguya as the vice president. Spending so much time together, Kaguya and Miyuki develop massive crushes on each other. However, neither of them wants to admit their feelings and confess their love, so both of them engage in an elaborate war of attrition in order to get the other party to confess first. Needless to say, hilarity ensues. There are several comedy manga based around romance on this list, each with their own unique relationship dynamic (such as Tomo-chan and Shikimori-san), but there's nothing quite like Kaguya-sama. The nonsensical banter, the absurd situations, the hysterical schemes and strategies… all of them are designed to make you laugh. And it is spectacularly successful in doing just that.
1. Hinamatsuri
Yoshifumi Nitta is a small-time Yakuza member who's been failing at his job. One night after a hard and fruitless day at work, a rather large capsule-like device appears in his living room. Much to his surprise, a little girl called Hina pops out of the pod. What's even more shocking is the fact that Hina has an extremely strong supernatural power. In exchange for delicious and expensive foods, Hina will demolish Nitta's rival group and take care of other menial Yakuza tasks. More often than not, Hina will go a little overkill at her job, such as the time she destroys an entire building just to scare some thugs. And since Nitta becomes her legal guardian, there's not a day that goes by without them getting into trouble, mayhem, and absurd situations. If we talk about absurd situations, then this list is full of those things. But none of them are as chaotic and unbelievable as the ones in Hinamatsuri: things like discussing bank robbery in a classroom while the actual robbers are actually standing there, or attacking a biker gang to steal their clothes, just to name a few. All of that craziness combined with Nitta's over the top reactions and Hina's deadpan expressions makes for one of the best comedy manga ever made.

10. Gokujo: Gokurakuin Joshikou Ryou Monogatari
Akabane is an extremely arrogant high school girl who always finds herself in competition with her classmates over who’s the most attractive. She strives to beat them in every possible category because her pride doesn’t allow her to settle for anything less than perfect. However her clumsiness gets in the way many times and often causes her to make a total idiot out of herself, with everyone laughing at her for her ditzy persona. The story takes place in an all girls school with lots of sexual innuendo to keep you coming back for more. If the synopsis wasn’t enough for you, Akabane’s outlandish behavior paired with all of the sexual references scattered all over the manga are sure to keep you laughing for a while. All of her friends have their own unique and wacky personality that just adds more craziness to this all girl fiasco, as some have absolutely no shame and will go to great lengths just to be praised. Oppai exposure, panty shots, you name it, all of that paired with plenty of stupidity and you have a remarkably funny manga to relax with.
9. Amano Megumi wa Suki Darake!
Manabu and Amano have known each other since childhood and so their relationship has always been quite topsy-turvy. Fast forward to where the two meet again, but only this time Amano isn’t the same girl that she used to be, at least in the physical category. Manabu is determined to graduate with high grades so that he can enter the prestigious Tokyo University, but with Amano constantly distracting him with her childish ways and new set of glorious oppai, Manabu is finding his life to be even more miserable by the minute. Every chapter of this manga is a for sure laugh as Manabu tries so hard to study and maintain his focus, but then Amano steps in out of nowhere to ruin his glory. Every time he tries to set time aside for himself to study for his exams, Amano’s oppai just throw his mind into a spiral of confusion and constant nosebleeds plague his poor soul. Amano really doesn’t have to try hard to annoy the living heck out of Manabu, as all she needs is her wacky persona to throw him into a fit. What makes this manga so funny is the two know each other so well, so their contrasting personalities always clash and Manabu’s reaction to her careless ways is priceless.
8. Magical Chef Shoujo Shizuru
In the Obento era, many people have surpassed the basic levels of cooking and now have special abilities called tools, which help them to create even more spectacular dishes. Shizuru’s mother disappeared as a young child but left her with a small knife and promised that the two will meet again. Desperately trying to discover her mother’s whereabouts, Shizuru decides to embark on her own adventure by enrolling into a bento cooking school despite not having developed tools of her own. She’s challenged one day to a cook off with everything on the line, and suddenly she transforms into a magical chef somehow. If transforming into a magical loli chef out of nowhere wasn’t enough for you, then expect more laughter to follow as Shizuru goes through so many hilarious moments. The people who she encounters throughout the manga are why this deserves a spot on the list. From a girl who has this obsession with showing off her boobs and allowing guys to lay under them, to a girl who has a mushroom for a head and touches the mushrooms in very erotic ways, this ecchi cookoff is sure to keep you fired up and laughing for hours at all of the crazy knife wielding battles Shizuru encounters.
7. NHK ni Youkoso
Sato Tatsuhiro really can’t live with drugs and shuts himself inside his room, and assumes that the NHK is some corrupt organization that has turned his life into what it is. Somehow, Sato falls in love with a girl named Misaki, who he thinks is out to kill him, but he doesn’t even know how to communicate with her let alone trust her. Leaving his room becomes more challenging as anime porn, manga, and doing drugs are preventing him from stepping out into the real world. The only sane person who can save him from this torment is none other than Misaki herself. Much can be stated about this manga that we’d need an individual article to just go over everything, so we’ll just try to make it as easy to digest as possible. Basically Sato is just a complete failure at life and in his imagination this girl will come to rescue him. This sounds tragic but it’s so funny how he desperately tries so hard to rid himself of the torment around him, then slowly dip back into the realm of darkness that is hikikomori. His lack of human interaction creates this comedic presence because he just can’t seem to wrap his head around what socializing or romance means, and those moments where Misaki gets caught in the most awkward scenarios are pure gold.
6. Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Tsuna comes home one day to find a baby dressed in a mafia outfit who claims to be his new home tutor. His purpose is to guide Tsuna into the role as the 10th boss of the Vongola mafia family. Tsuna must now put his past life behind him and embark on a challenging journey through countless battles and dangerous encounters to ensure his spot before it’s too late. The story is an action packed adventure but the relationship between Tsuna and Reborn are nothing short of hilarious. Tsuna lacks experience in every aspect so there are times where he screws up so much that it puts his entire team in danger, and now you see as he desperately tries to dig his way out of it all with all that he has in his arsenal. When enemies aren’t being gunned down, Tsuna always makes an effort to keep you laughing because he can never seem to get everything right, and his teammates just shake their heads in disappointment.
5. Prison School
Hachimitsu Private Academy was once an all girls school, until they finally decided it was ok to enroll males. When Kiyoshi makes his way into the boarding school, he’s amazed by all of the beautiful woman that surround him. Unfortunately one evening Kiyoshi and the other boys who enrolled were convicted for a crime and were thrown into a jail located smack dab in the middle of the school grounds. With a perverted principal, sick and twisted girls out for revenge, and a security guard with oppai bigger than your head, Prison School is an absolute treat. Kiyoshi and his team of 4 other young men must somehow figure out ways to escape this conundrum before all hell breaks loose. You’ll be dying of laughter at the interactions that these guys have, as they constantly try to undermine the female guards and then end up getting badly beaten up by Meiko’s whip, or Kiyoshi finds himself in sexually awkward positions just to prove his innocence. Takehito is the mastermind behind the plans and he honestly is what breathes life into this manga, as he always lays out incredibly fool proof plans, but then somehow everyone gets caught and receives severe, hilarious punishment.
4. Gintama
Gintama has been many of our Honey’s lists for quite some time, and it truly deserves its presence in every way. Gintoki is just a wandering ex-samurai who takes to the streets doing whatever he can for work to get by. Along with his pal Shimura, alien Kagura, and giant dog named Sadaharu these four create a business known as Yorozuya which take them in all types of directions in this action adventure comedy. Gintama can’t really be defined by all single word so we’ll just say that this manga has just about everything you need to have you laughing for days. Whether it’s the odd encounters with truly revolting creatures like Pandemonium, to a ton of hilarious references to other manga, Gintoki and his crew experience so much in this series that you wish this actual world truly existed. Every chapter is unpredictable and spontaneous, which is what truly brings out the best from this manga because you’re never sure what to expect at any given moment. Gintoki could be caught up in a very serious confrontation and then suddenly something truly random happens that leaves you bursting out laughing. Random is the only word we can think of for this one, so be sure to check it out.
3. Azumanga Daioh
Azumanga is a character driven manga that is full of witty humor, addictive story, and extremely fun. It focuses on the lives of eight girls who all have their own quirky personalities, which when placed all together create a thrill ride of excitement to keep you coming back for more. Despite having a short summary, the meat and bones of it all are found within the pages of the manga which is full of random antics at every corner. The story really isn’t much of a story since there really isn’t a romantic type of encounter that takes place, and much of it all really doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. It’s all been compiled into this ingenious piece of work that just looks at the life of eight girls who all deserve their own award for their wacky behavior, with strange encounters that are sure to have you letting out a chuckle or two. Osaka is one of our favorites because of how spaced out and witty she is, despite no one ever really understanding a thing she says. Each girl has something to offer for everyone and that’s the major selling point.
2. Yotsuba to! (Yotsuba&!)
Yotsuba isn’t your typical young little girl as she has such a grand personality, and her curiosity to learn new things turn her life into a magical one. Her father accompanies her on her travels around Japan in search for something new, while they also building a strong father-daughter relationship that’s sure to capture your heart and make your laugh. The two encounter new friends along the way and shows everyone around them that life can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Yotsuba and Yousuke make such a great comedic team because on the one hand, Yotsuba just wants to see the world for herself without ever stopping, while Yousuke desperately tries to hang on for the ride as she takes him in all sorts of directions. It’s a slice of life comedy that teaches us not to take things for granted, and to laugh at all of life’s miseries because we only have one opportunity to live. Her incredibly passionate spirit and high energy make you wish you were 5 again, with her glowing smile, and constant misunderstandings that will make you laugh at her innocence.
1. GTO
GTO is just a basket full of joy, self discovery, and constant laughter as Onizuka retires from his life in a biker gang with his close friend Ryuuji, and decides to work at Holy Forest Academy Private School where things aren’t very holy at all. Onizuka just wanted a fresh new beginning and so he finds himself in a pickle when he’s given the task of managing a class full of troublemakers. This isn’t the only challenge that he now has to face, as the school principal Uchiyamada is nothing but a thorn in his backside in this fantastic comedy about school life, and learning from mistakes. While GTO is a story that focuses on making us laugh out loud by Onizuka’s often perverse antics, there’s plenty to learn from in the series which can actually bring happiness to your life and turn your whole day around. What made us laugh so much throughout this whole series is the back and forth relationship between Uchiyamada and Onizuka, as the two clearly despise one another and will do anything to get under each other’s skin. One example is when Uchiyamada buys his new sparkling Toyota Cresta, only to have Onizuka and one his students totally smash it to bits during their wild ride. Uchiyamada’s reactions are priceless and really help to keep the flow of laughter moving.
