Monthly Manga Moments: The End of Destruction in Magu-chan

February is supposed to be the month of love, yet we are a tad bit teary-eyed for this month’s manga moment. As per usual, it’s time for us to pick a notable event in the world of manga that happened during the previous month. For the month of February, we’re choosing Magu-chan: God of Destruction reaching the end of its serialization, and here are the reasons why.

What is Magu-chan: God of Destruction?

Magu-chan: God of Destruction follows the titular evil deity as he attempts to make the world his own. Interestingly, he proves to be quite adaptive to his newly weakened form and tries to conquer the world in a variety of ways with huge help from his trusty aide, the human Ruru. By being honest to a fault, Ruru managed to convince Mag Menuek to essentially be an important part of her family. Mag Menuek, more commonly known as Magu-chan, also prioritizes Ruru’s feelings and happiness as he believes it is an Evil God’s duty to fulfill his followers’ desires. The wacky plot only gets wackier with other Evil Gods joining the fray.

That Absolute Masterpiece of an Ending

It is no secret that manga artists have difficulties putting a justified ending to their series, and it is majorly because of the readers’ high expectations. Even manga with a huge reader base like Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) and Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) faced scrutiny for their respective endings. That being said, Magu-chan: God of Destruction dishing out a beautiful masterpiece of a final chapter is already a feat in and of itself. Magu-chan not only pulls off a proper ending, but also manages to execute a timelapse really well. Kamiki-sensei includes really important and interesting points in time after Ruru and the gang’s graduation, taking the readers on a wild roller coaster ride. Best of all, the love and happiness we share with our beloved characters also grows at an exponential rate as we see their lives literally flash in front of us. Of course, ending on a happy note is always a welcome development. The only downside of experiencing a cacophony of emotions at once is being left bemused once it’s over.

One Last Spurt

Magu-chan may have ended during the first part of February, but that wasn’t the last time we got to see our favorite characters in ink, which also proves we’re not the only ones who fell in love with this unique manga series. Weeks after Magu-chan ended, Protect Me, Shugomaru! – another Shounen Jump manga – dedicated a good chunk of its precious pages to feature the lovely Evil Gods. This unsuspected feature is heartwarming not just because it shows one mangaka respecting another, but also because it’s a pleasant surprise for fans of Magu-chan to see the cast one last time. Plus, it serves as some sort of closure to the series’ unprecedented ending as well.

Magu-chan: God of Destruction may not be as flashy or action-packed as big-name manga like One Piece or Naruto, but its clever way of looking at the world has been refreshing for the past few years. Even though Magu-chan isn’t the only manga series to end this month, it being the lesser-known manga makes us want to feature it over the others, especially with the beautiful ending it graced the readers with.
