    Introduction and Story

After a final assassination target, the old but experienced assassin finds himself looking forward to an easier life training others in his craft. In route home, the assassin learns that he has been deceived by his organization and is targeted for death in a commercial plane. Despite his best efforts, the assassin dies but soon meets an odd Goddess who asks for help in eliminating a hero who eventually will go rogue and destroy the world he fought so valiantly for. If the assassin takes on this mission, he will be reborn as Lugh, a young aristocratic assassin from the Tuatha De family. Reborn as an assassin once more, Lugh decides that no longer will he be forced to kill for anyone but will target those he feels are threats. Sekai Saikou no Ansatsusha, Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei suru (The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat) as an Aristocrat—or World’s Finest Assassin for short—piqued our interest here at Honey’s Anime for two reasons. One, the main protagonist isn’t another teenager/young man dying as a hero but is instead an older assassin who has quite a bit of life experience. The other reason is that this series wasn’t about a hero being born into the world but an assassin meant to kill the hero! There are a lot of unique ideas and themes found in World’s Finest Assassin but, did those alterations to the usual isekai format go well or did this anime become a failed attempt at being different? Let us find out in our review of The World’s Finest Assassin!

Step Aside Boy, Let an Old Timer Show His Worth!

Really, we can’t emphasize this enough, having an older protagonist is a breath of fresh air in the isekai genre. Most series have characters no older than their mid-30s and yet The World’s Finest Assassin gives us an older man who could be almost 60 or older. What makes this anime so much more enjoyable is that our main character Lugh has wisdom, experience, and a level-headed thought process not seen too often in anime in general! Lugh’s character from a young boy to a young teen is the coolest and most clever isekai hero we’ve seen without a doubt. Due to his life experience, Lugh isn’t emotionally traumatized or full of perverted tendencies but instead knows how to control his mind and his desires…which is very necessary as he is constantly surrounded by waifu. Lugh’s combat skills too aren’t just OP because he was given those abilities but due to his age and experience. Lugh is confident in every action he takes and how to best approach a situation. We have fallen in love with Lugh’s character and will no doubt have him in our minds when we see other isekai protagonists rise in the anime world.

Honestly, the visuals in The World’s Finest Assassin are gorgeous with strong character designs, beautiful scenery pieces and even nicer battle scenes. Studio SILVER LINK is known for some solid anime works—like Chivalry of a Failed Knight and Strike the Blood—but we think this particular anime looks stellar. The next time we go to an anime convention we hope to see some wall scrolls of The World’s Finest Assassin so we can adorn our offices with some solid art pieces!

    Dark Narrative for an Isekai

You’d be surprised to see that some of the subject matter in The World’s Finest Assassin is quite heavy and dark. Several episodes deal with female enslavement, child abandonment, and abuse. While The World’s Finest Assassin doesn’t constantly stay on dark themes, when it does have them they are quite emotionally gripping and are great for shock value. One episode even made us tear up, which is rare for most isekai series.

    No Stopping This Story

One issue we did have with The World’s Finest Assassin is that the pacing of the story can be a bit extreme. Lugh’s character ages exceptionally fast as we see him as a baby, a young child, a teen, and a young man all within the course of six episodes. Clearly, there was a dire need to avoid taking too long with unneeded filler but light novel enthusiasts will notice some of the narrative being skimmed over in this anime adaptation.

One of the Coolest Final Attacks Ever

The final episode—episode 12—of The World’s Finest Assassin has Lugh use a super explosive attack that ends the alleged hero’s life in one magnificent attack and, wow…that scene gave us goosebumps. Needless to say, it was hands down one of the most jaw-dropping moments in an anime fight we’ve seen to date and we hope season 2 has some similarly spectacular scenes like this one!

Could We Get a Spin-Off Series?

As much as we loved Lugh, we wouldn’t mind a spin-off series focusing on the assassin in his original world. The opening images show he assassinated various targets prior to his untimely death and we’d love to see those moments in an anime. Plus, we might learn the assassin's name before he became Lugh.
