Truth be told, when we saw the promo materials for The Vampire Dies in No Time, we thought it would just be some forgettable comedy that would toss around a few tired vampire jokes and disappear out of everyone’s memories as quickly as it had arrived. Much to our surprise, though, this unassuming little anime turned out to be one of the funniest shows of the whole Fall 2021 season! Let’s take a well-deserved closer look at The Vampire Dies in No Time.

    Charming Characters with Chemistry

The core appeal of this anime lies with its main trio: Ronaldo, a vain but socially inept vampire hunter; Draluc, a weak vampire who turns to dust at the slightest sign of danger (but enjoys pushing Ronaldo’s buttons regardless); and John, Draluc’s precious armadillo familiar with a variety of talents and his own fan club. They all wind up living in an apartment together and share a kind of adorable family dynamic while constantly getting on each other’s nerves. Makoto Furukawa (best known as Saitama from One Punch Man) gives Ronaldo an honest but dorky tone that ultimately paints the character as a good person, while Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch from Code Geass) infuses Draluc with both bombastic grandeur and quick wit that mask how fragile the vampire actually is. And, of course, John’s cute little “nu” noises can convey any emotion he needs to express, courtesy of Mutsumi Tamura (Kobayashi from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid). Even if the rest of the anime was utter trash, we could watch these three live out their ridiculous sitcom antics forever. Ronaldo and Draluc act like best friends or boyfriends whose unbreakable bond is only rivaled by their obsession with annoying each other, and John is like their child who puts up with their shenanigans out of love... and also because they’re pretty entertaining.

    Pitch-Perfect Dumb Humor

This anime is dumb. It’s just incredibly dumb. But it’s so darn good at being dumb that you simply have to respect how expertly dumb it truly is. There’s an art to stupid humor that you can see in films like What We Do in the Shadows or parody anime like Attack on Titan: Junior High—despite how objectively cheesy and/or unfunny a joke is, the sincerity and talent with which it’s delivered forces you to laugh anyway. And, thanks to its trio of main characters being so well-acted and lovable, The Vampire Dies in No Time is able to put them in the dumbest situations imaginable while still being gut-bustingly hilarious. Ronaldo and Draluc face off against a vampire who can hypnotize people into wearing micro-bikinis, try to sneak Ronaldo into Draluc’s family reunion by pretending that he’s a pole dancer named Paul McCartney, have a dance battle to determine who has to pay for the new game console, and on and on. Our favorite moment has to be when their kitchen gets infested with vampiric vegetables and Draluc has to cook them into a soup to subdue the horde. However, since the vegetables are rotten, Ronaldo and John spit out the lovingly prepared dish anyway. It’s utterly absurd, and we love it.
