    We have been following Isekai Shokudou 2 (Restaurant to Another World 2) and we end up feeling hungry after each episode! Several of the mouthwatering recipes featured are Japanese soul food, like omurice, or curry, that have been previously featured on Honey’s Anime. So, this time we decided to make the rice burger as shown in episode 6! Elf Fardania and half-elf Alice visit Western Restaurant Nekoya and place an order for a vegan meal because all creatures of elven descent cannot consume meat or dairy. Chef Tenshu prepares a surprise meal for them, a delicious burger with rice buns and vegetable tempura!

    Rice Buns?

    Rice bun burgers were introduced in Japan in 1987 by fast-food restaurant chain MOS. Since then, they have spread across Asia and they offer an alternative to regular bread buns. Rice burgers can come in many variations, such as with kara-age (fried chicken), pork, shrimp tempura, fried vegetables, and more. They are still very popular and a delicious alternative to the standard burgers we are used to.

    Rice Burger with Mixed Vegetable Tempura ( 2 servings )

    What you need:

    Rice buns

    Cooked short-grain rice
    1 cup
    Soy sauce
    1 tbsp
    Vegetable oil
    2 tbsp

    Mixed vegetable tempura

    Your choice of vegetables, shredded in thin long pieces. For example, eggplant, zucchini, carrot, bell pepper.

    Cold sparkling water
    1 cup
    Baking soda
    1 tbsp
    Cornflour
    2 tbsp
    Sunflower oil
    2 cups
    Rice flour
    1 ½ cups
    Salt
    ½ tbsp

    How to make:

      Cook the rice and let it cool down.

      With wet hands, make 4 rice balls, then flatten them.

      brush the surface of the rice buns with soy sauce

      Heat the oil in a non-sticking frying pan, and fry the rice buns until their surface is brown, and a bit hardened. Put the buns aside.

      In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, cornflower, and baking soda and mix gently.

      Add the cold sparkling water and whisk.

      Dip the vegetables in the batter.

      Heat the sunflower oil in a pot and fry the vegetables.

      Transfer to a plate with a paper towel on top, to gather excess oil.

      Assemble the burger: Take one rice bun, top with a nori sheet, tempura vegetables, and place the other bun on top.

    Final Thoughts

    Here you go, you are ready to taste a delicious rice burger! Itadakimasu! Once you master making the rice buns, you can experiment with different fillings. You can also make delicious sauces to go with the filling, based on mirin or soy sauce, add sesame on top of the buns for texture, use sesame oil instead of soy sauce on the surface of the buns, and experiment with the size of the burgers.
