The market has been saturated with isekai anime in recent years, and that, sadly, means we also get a few mediocre ones. On the brighter side of things, good competition forces others to step up their game. More and more series are coming up with interesting twists and whatnot to veer from the cliche. Interestingly, summer 2021 was packed with such anime. With the numerous isekai anime we’ve got this summer, here are our top 5 best picks!

    5. Meikyuu Black Company (The Dungeon of Black Company)

The Dungeon of Black Company is obviously not your typical isekai. Other than tackling the issue of black companies, the main character stops at nothing if it means achieving his goals. There is just no such thing as too low for Ninomiya, which is also the crux of the anime’s comedy. Even though it has great comedy and out-of-the-box concept, the execution is a bit wonky. The plot is a bit difficult to follow, and the timeline jumps from time to time. In all its craziness, The Dungeon of Black Company still is a great anime to watch if you’re looking for a good laugh.

    4. Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta…X (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="KIZX-473" text="" url="" ]

Just when Catarina thought she was bound for a happy life after avoiding all of Fortune Lover’s doom flags, a lot of new dangers hit her in the face. This time, however, she doesn't have the advantage of having a reference. All she can rely on now are her friends and herself. Removing the point of reference is a pleasant addition to the well-loved anime. This makes My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X familiar but also different from the first season. Catarina’s desperate attempts to survive while also increasing her ever-growing harem has truly livened up summer 2021.

    3. Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="imdb" url="https://ift.tt/3y8o1Jc" ]

How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom is yet another anime that plows through isekai tropes. Instead of fighting strong monsters and mastering peerless fighting techniques, Kazuya uses that big brain of his to amass money. While it still has the servant system, which often consists of multiple races, they are not just pretty faces or fanservice. In fact, they have different talents that will help Kazuya achieve his goal. This change of pace is a true breath of fresh air to the saturated genre. The author’s writing prowess and wit shine the most when Kazuya utilizes an otherwise useless skill and brings out its fullest potential. Truly, it is an enjoyable watch.

    2. Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken 2nd Season Part 2 (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Part 2)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="BCXA-1613" text="" url="" ]

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has already established a solid fan base. The second part of the season continues Rimuru’s rise to power. Veldora has finally joined Rimuru’s already strong army of monsters, while Rimuru becomes a demon lord. The story is undeniably becoming more and more interesting. Our only issue with it is the pacing. Most of the 2nd part is spent talking and slow-paced tension building. While it definitely pays off in the end with that glorious fight against Clayman, we would definitely appreciate it if the buildup wasn’t stretched out too much.

    1. Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu (Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="DMPXA-210" text="" url="" ]

Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy is a bit similar to That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. At least, that’s what it seems at first. Even though Makoto is also unintentionally building his own army of monsters, his similarity with Rimuru stops at face value. Despite experiencing the worst of humanity, Makoto’s able to maintain his composure but also learns from it. This season of Tsukimichi may be dedicated to worldbuilding and establishing the characters, but it definitely doesn’t lack action scenes, good comedy, or enjoyable adventures. The highlight, of course, is that the last episodes showcase everything the anime has to offer in one big bang.

    Final Thoughts

Some may say that we now have too many isekai anime in the market. While it is undeniably true that there are a LOT of isekai anime out there, there is no such thing as too much anime for us. That, of course, doesn’t mean that we will praise mediocre series to the high heavens. We have our own standards and only vouch for anime we think are enjoyable. That being said, summer 2021 is yet another isekai-packed season, and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
