School life pretty much guarantees social dramas. Be it about friends, clubs, family, or whatnot. Perhaps a big contributing factor to that is the fact that students, especially high school students, are undergoing their peak puberty years. It’s the time wherein everybody’s trying to figure out who they are, what they are, what they want to be, and where they want to be. During the process, there’s a lot of confusion, mistakes, and experimentation. Nonetheless, it’s quite entertaining, both in the humorous sense and embarrassing, to witness and reminisce. My Love Mix-Up! is that kind of self-discovery.

    Discussion Time

Souta Aoki is the goofy, lazy type of student. Living up to that stereotype, he forgets to bring an eraser during an exam. His seatmate and first crush, Mio Hashimoto, happens to bring another one and lets him borrow it. After playing around with it, he sees a name written on it. It was Ida with a matching heart at the end. To add insult to injury, he accidentally drops the eraser. It’s then picked up by that Ida who is sitting in front of him, and a domino effect of misunderstandings ensues.

    1. Gloriously Funny

My Love Mix-Up!’s comedy factor primarily relies on the misunderstanding trope, and Wataru Hinekure does a very good job at it. The scenes are very normal, and the ensuing chaos somewhat logical. Partnered with the fact that the protagonist is a klutz who somehow manages to get himself in the dumbest situations, you can imagine how he makes things worse. On the brighter side of things, he’s really pure-hearted. He doesn’t mind putting himself in the most embarrassing of situations if it’s for the sake of his crush. Ain’t that cute?

    2. Ships Galore

Even though the series has a Shounen Ai tag, there are other ships too. Those other ships may have high probability of sinking in the next volumes, but it’s still nice to root for them even for a brief moment of time. Since there really are a lot of mix-ups, a supposed love triangle turns into a confusing love web. One character is associated with another either through genuine emotions, developing emotion, or just a misunderstanding. The more infuriating thing is that these ships have great chemistry, making it harder to choose.

    3. No Hateable Character

The best thing about this series is that all the characters are likable. Aoki may be lazy and goofy, but he is in no way an eyesore. Ida can seem like a goody two shoes but never to the point of looking pretentious. Aida and Hashimoto are just being typical high schoolers and in no way hateable. We can’t, of course, speak about the future volumes, but we really like this series’ characters so far. Since there isn’t anyone we want to club to death, it also makes the series fluffy and nice.

    Final Thoughts

My Love Mix-Up! is a fluffy romantic comedy that gives justice to that description. It has lots of comedy, but it also makes our hearts flinch every now and then. Not only that, the series is a roller coaster of feelings. It makes one experience a plethora of emotions, ending on a cute note that makes one to ask for more.
