Slated for 21 episodes in its second season, the severely underrated Mairimashita Iruma-kun! (Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!) has been pushing forward positively throughout the Spring and Summer seasons. We’ll soon be faced with the final episode so it’s about time to look back on the season and determine whether or not it has been a fitting follow-up to the super enjoyable first season which aired back in 2019!

    Demon Cycle

This season took its sweet time in getting around to addressing the major plot point they left hanging at the end of the first season. In the post-credits scene of the first season of Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!, we are presented with a purple-haired Iruma seemingly going through some kind of rebellious phase. The truth is that as Iruma levels up at school, his demonic power increases, enabling Iruma to access greater amounts of Sullivan’s power locked up in the mysterious ring handed to him. The power in the ring gains sentience and the ability to manifest itself and communicate with Iruma after he achieves Gimel (3) rank. The manifested power, now known as Alicred, has a bit of a mischievous side, and he casts a spell on Iruma which causes him to have a bolder, more confident, but more abrasive personality. Other characters rationalize Iruma’s more ambitious, more powerful presence as symptoms of his Evil Cycle, a phase that all demons experience as a result of suppressing their evil, destructive instincts for long periods of time. During an Evil Cycle, a demon will have their quintessential demonic traits heightened, such as ambition, selfishness, and rebelliousness. This is especially true of Iruma, who, in his “Evil Cycle”, rallies his classmates to demand better treatment and better facilities for the “Misfit Class”. The result? Iruma’s efforts land his class in the Royal One building, previously used by one individual and one individual only—the previous Demon King.

    Romance

While it has been bubbling under the surface for certain characters since season one (we’re talking about you, Ameri) the topic of romance has not been a major priority for Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!. Be that as it may, the second season has sowed the seeds for a budding romance by doubling down on Clara Valac’s crush on Iruma, as well as confirming the obvious romantic feelings student council president Ameri has for our adorable MC. In an episode where the female students from the Misfit Class invite Ameri over for tea, snacks and girl talk, Clara, Ameri, Keroli and Ix Elizabetta bond over their similarities and differences. All of them agreed on one thing: Evil Cycle Iruma was hot! While Iruma is still in his dense MC phase, he will be completely useless when it comes to these things, so the romance in this show is still in its infancy. That being said; however, it’s fun to consider that they’re already thinking about who is going to be by Iruma’s side when he finally becomes king of the demons. Because that’s where this is going, right?

    Villains

After the arrest of Amy Kiriwo in the first season, Babylys goes back to a state of peace for a while. However, when Iruma and his classmates are taken on a field trip to the famous Walter Park amusement park, things start off fun and exciting as Iruma and company enjoy the fun activities there. The group separates into three groups—Ameri, Clara, Ix Elizabetta, and Keroli led by Opera; Iruma, Asmodeus, Sabnock, and Agares go with Balam-sensei, while the rest go with the grouchy Kalego-sensei. Some of the staff at Walter Park first appear as passionate and kind individuals who exist to make the experience of every visitor a great one. Iruma even gets separated from the rest of the gang while at the park and nearly dragged into the shadowy alleyways by a sketchy somebody. He is saved by a white-haired woman with golden eyes who then leads him back to his friends. Little does Iruma know that she and the other major staff members of Walter Park are the notorious yet mysterious Six Fingers, a criminal group known for their evil schemes. Like in the first season, the antagonist of this season is only being revealed towards the end of it for a short-lived arc. However, it’s clear that the series is slowly building up towards a sort of mega villain that is the culmination of all of these short, yet significant arcs, especially since we still know very little about seedy figures like Baal, who is Kiriwo’s senior from school and from criminal activity.

    Growth

Iruma and Balam happen to be among those evacuated when a young child emerges from a pile of rubble begging for help because other children are still trapped. Iruma feels completely helpless, which turns into anger at the adult demons who simply turned their backs on a child in danger. Iruma’s anger is also based on the fact that he and his classmates were having such a great day before all the destruction. Inspired by Iruma’s successful retrieval of the kid in danger, Sabnock and Asmodeus begin engaging the magical beast closest to them. Things get out of control when the dragon launches a full-on projectile beam at Asmodeus, seemingly vaporizing him, but it turns out that Sabnock put himself in danger to save his rival. The various students of the Misfit Class all face their own personal crises in the wake of the destruction, but Asmodeus and Iruma himself exhibit the most profound growth. Due to his own thoughtless selflessness, Iruma puts himself in danger, but since he’s so used to being on his own, he doesn’t realize that putting himself in danger to save other people means that other people have to do the same to save him! Asmodeus is scolded heavily by Sabnock for stunting his own growth through his hyperfixation on Iruma. The three magical beasts are dealt with, but soon after they all fall, they combine to form a Composite Magical Beast! Kalego, Opera, and Balam join forces and knock the beast out with one team attack, but it musters all the mana it can, preparing for one last blast aimed at none other than the emergency shelter where everyone else has been evacuated! Luckily, Ronove uses his Charisma ability to turn the beast’s attention onto himself, but Iruma intercepts the beam!
