Unlike the original series written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Yuukoku no Moriarty (Moriarty The Patriot) focuses more on Sherlock Holmes’ greatest rival and villain, James Moriarty. As the title suggests, Moriarty in this series deviates from the original. He’s still a brilliant criminal mastermind, but instead of simply plotting heinous criminal acts chaotically, he has a purpose. The 1st Cours of the series establishes his character as sly and patriotic since childhood. In fact, it’s not an exaggeration to say that he literally worked his way to nobility only to dismantle this shrewd system later on. Three episodes in, here are our first impressions of Moriarty The Patriot 2nd Cours!

The Pieces Are Coming Together

During the 1st Cours, we’ve seen William’s skill in planning crimes. Not only that, but he has also managed to find and recruit like-minded individuals to serve him, thus the establishment of his underground criminal consultation services. As his reputation grows, he has been dubbed the Lord of Crime by both the nobles and the common folk. As his exploits continue to serve justice to evil nobles, Sherlock Holmes, the renowned detective, makes his appearance. In the 2nd Cours, more esteemed characters like Mycroft Holmes and Irene Adler make their grand entries. Mycroft is known to be the government itself, while Irene Adler is known as a great pretender and criminal. With these two gears starting to move, the clockwork is set in motion. What we’re interested in seeing is what this clockwork actually does and how it will affect the system.

Plan Upon Plan Upon Plan

We’ve already established that both Sherlock and William have great minds. With Sherlock’s deductive reasoning, he can solve almost every case he gets, while William’s heinous plans bring the hammer of justice to corrupt nobles. The mental warfare, however, doesn’t end between the two. Mycroft turns out to be another big player, and even though Irene Adler pales in comparison to the other three, she still devises laudable plans. A good example of this is when she manages to outsmart Sherlock and make him assume responsibility for burning her home. In the third episode, however, Irene Adler pledges loyalty to Moriarty and assumes the persona of James Bond. That being said, we are excited to see what her new character may offer as the other three work behind the scenes.

Who Exactly Is the Enemy?

Based on the original novel, Moriarty is supposed to be Sherlock’s enemy. Given that we’re following Moriarty’s perspective, it’s acceptable to think that Sherlock is the series’ antagonist, but after the first three episodes of the 2nd Cours, some rethinking is necessary. With Irene Adler serving Moriarty and Moriarty seemingly adeptly pulling Sherlock’s strings, it doesn’t seem like the two will be the greatest threat to Moriarty. In addition to that, the Moriarty brothers have also already revealed their identity to Mycroft, making the latter their ally, albeit tentatively. This begs the question, Who exactly is the big bad in the series? Perhaps, one of the major characters will turn against Moriarty, or perhaps, all of them will join hands to achieve the greater good—reforming the system.

Final Thoughts

Moriarty The Patriot is obviously not like your typical anime, and the 2nd Cours is reinforcing that point. The series is an intricate web of plotting, executing, and deception. There are a lot of big characters that make the already complex series more complicated, but in a good way. Unlike the original novel, this series’ Moriarty has an obvious direction, and we’d definitely love to witness his entire journey.
