- The results are in for author Eiichiro Oda's manga mega-hit ONE PIECE’s worldwide internet poll dubbed “World Top 100” which ranked the top 100 most popular characters.
- The official rankings have been announced in a two-part episode of the special web series “ONE PIECE TIMES” on the official ONE PIECE YouTube channel. The first video, released on May 4th 7PM (PST) / 10PM (EST) announced the winners from 100-21st. The second, which premiered on May 5th 5AM (PST) / 8AM (EST), revealed the top 20 characters. The specials featured celebrity hosts and guests from around the world.
- The winning top three characters are: Luffy, Zoro, and Nami. The runners-up, fourth through sixth place, are: Sanji, Trafalgar Law, and Nico Robin.
- Content exclusive to the specials includes a letter from ONE PIECE’s author regarding the contest results and a special video message from Luffy’s international anime voice actors. In addition, Oda will soon be creating a brand new illustration including the top 50 characters plus some others.
- Held from January 3rd through February 28th, this contest has been a rollercoaster of a competition. Most dramatically, Nami’s ranking leapt from seventh all the way to third place in the second half of voting. These results demonstrate the enormous diversity of the ONE PIECE fandom. The character X Drake, whose design is considered to be inspired by the country of Turkey, was ranked 41st overall, but 2nd in Turkey. The character Morgans ranked 80th worldwide but 38th in North America, suggesting that his knowledge of global affairs in the world of ONE PIECE appeals to Americans. A character whose image country is Russia, Nico Robin, ranked 6th overall. Carrot surged from 17th place to finish in 8th place. Greg Werner (ONE PIECE commentator/critic) said, “Carrot is a beloved character and the dedication of furry fandom may have played a large role in this result.”
- With such diversity, Luffy’s win in this contest cements the protagonist as the fans’ favorite, while Nami’s surge in votes speaks to the growing popularity of female characters in the world of manga. By the end of voting, 12 million votes were cast for a total of 1,174 different characters.

When “Morgans” was announced as number 80, the entire studio cheered. “This is big news!” exclaimed Roger (U.S. guest) quoting Morgans, “He is one of my favorite characters in the series so I’m very happy.” Morgans was ranked 38th in North America (analysis demonstrates fans find his knowledge of world affairs to be cool). The character “X Drake” has ranked 41st overall but was 2nd in Turkey. “Drake’s design is considered to be inspired by the country of Turkey. That’s why he’s so popular.” said Tolga (Turkish guest). “Enel,” whose outfit is said to emulate traditional Indonesian clothing ranked at 35th. Murders (Indonesian guest) commented that the pants “Enel” wears reminds him of batik pants. It became clear that the rankings were indeed the results of each country’s culture and sometimes how the characters embodied similarities to their cultures.
- Seeing “Corazon” rank in at 13th, Greg commented, “It’s been said that this character’s design is reminiscent of the rock band Kiss, so that may be why he is so popular overseas.” The entire studio was in shock when “Portgas D. Ace” was announced at 9th. Once again the audience was shocked when they learned “Carrot,” who was ranked at 17th during the midterm results was ranked at 8th. To this Greg commented, “Carrot is a beloved character and the dedication of furry fandom may have played a large role in this result” (Carrot was ranked 24th in Japan). When “Nico Robin” was announced at 6th, Kristina (Russian guest) expressed her excitement, “Oda-sensei mentioned that Robin was from Russia so this makes me feel like we all ranked 6th!”
- Before the top 5 were announced, Yamauchi-san exclaimed that he would “shave his head and even shave off his eyebrows if Nami was not in 5th place.” In the end, the results were “Trafalgar Law” in 5th, “Sanji” at 4th, “Nami” at 3rd, “Zoro” in 2nd, and “Luffy” in 1st. Many fans, including Greg and the others, were pleasantly surprised to see “Nami’s” rank up since her previous midterm results showed her in7th place. Greg shouted, “This is a revolution!” Jade (South African guest) shared, “I work as a cartographer, so I look up to her in that sense as well.” Everybody was excited to know who was number one! Was it “Luffy” or “Zoro”? “Either way, I’m going to scream!” said Yamauchi-san while the studio burst into laughter. Once “Luffy” was announced as number one, the entire audience celebrated the results. During the celebration, Hamaie-san commented, “There are so many fans of different characters, but everybody is satisfied with these results. There’s no other manga that gets us this fired up over a ranking poll.” Once again, this has demonstrated the influence of ONE PIECE and the strength of “Luffy’s” presence for fans all over the world. Hamaie-san read Eiichiro Oda’s letter to the audience and closed the program with the slogan, “WE ARE ONE PIECE.” 9

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="© Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha" url="" ]"WORLD TOP 100! Usually, this character ranking poll is only done in Japan but by opening it up to the world through the internet, I was able to see in real time a glimpse of which characters are popular in different regions of the world and some characters went up in the rankings since the midterm results, so it was truly entertaining. I heard that there seemed to be some movements online organized by fans to come together to cast votes for unexpected characters. That didn’t get past the production team (laugh). It’s amazing how different the preferences towards these characters are all over the world and it was so fun seeing how it went down for Robin and Carrot. As I promised, I’ll be creating a cool piece with the characters who ranked in the top 50 plus some others so please look forward to it. Thank you so much to all the ONE PIECE fans all over the world for casting so many votes! "
