Our Favourite Stay-at-Home Hubby: The Immortal Tatsu From Gokushufudou (The Way of the Househusband)
As most of us have heard by now, the extremely hilarious manga known as Gokushufudou (The Way of the Househusband) was released earlier this month of April as an original Netflix animation! The series follows Tatsu, a former yakuza who left his life of violence and organized crime behind to be a loving and supporting househusband to his wife, Miku. The series leans on contrast and unexpected outcomes to deliver some of the most oddly wholesome yet banterous comedy we’ve seen this year! In the spotlight today is none other than our favourite stay-at-home hubby, “The Immortal”, Tatsu!
A Chef!
One of the things Tatsu does better than beating the living daylights out of his enemies and surviving sticky situations is cook a good meal! With his brilliant knife skills, life skills, and raw talent, The Way of the Househusband has shown us some of Tatsu’s epic sills in the kitchen! Some of his most well-made dishes include the bento he makes for Miku in the very first scene of the show! Consisting of beautiful omelettes, fluffy onigiri (rice balls) made to look like polar bears, sausages, karaage (fried chicken), and various veggies, the lunchbox Tatsu makes for his wife is definitely one we’d love to sink our teeth into as well! Good thing she forgot it at home! Later in the first episode, Tatsu is visited by a travelling salesman who is dealing in kitchen knives. Initially terrified by Tatsu, the salesman gets a taste of home when the former yakuza asks to test out his products. With superior dexterity, Tatsu quickly chefs up a hamburger steak meal fit for a king! Tatsu’s abilities in the kitchen even extend to baking and dessert-making too!
A Legendary Monster!
“The Immortal Dragon”, Tatsu, is a legend among gangsters and law enforcement alike! His wildest achievement came right before his retirement from the criminal underworld! He is said to have completely smashed the offices of ten rival gangs, by himself, unarmed. His reputation precedes him and not even police officers want any of that smoke! Tatsu’s an overpowered protagonist in nearly every sense of the term, and it’s even clearer when he interacts with other gangsters, especially his former subordinate, Masa.
A Sweetheart
Throughout the series, we see Tatsu’s love for his wife expressed in so many different, wholesome ways. One of the funniest and oddly heartwarming moments in the series is Miku’s birthday. Tatsu goes out to a video retail store to buy his wife a boxset of her favourite anime series and sings her birthday while presenting a cake he baked for her. The singing was totally unsettling but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right? Another time we see Tatsu’s feelings for his wife is when a hectic time at work leaves Miku tired and drained. Tatsu sets up a footbath, massage chair, and lemonade to help dissipate Miku’s fatigue.
Final Thoughts
Gokushufudou (The Way of the Househusband) is a fun anime with a great and lovable protagonist! Tatsu’s one-track mind, insane talent, and gangsterisms make him hilarious to watch, but the fact that he’s actually quite a decent guy to the people around him adds to the wholesomeness of the series! The star of the show by all accounts, Tatsu has definitely made a name for himself in the world of comedy anime and we simply can’t wait to see more of him!
