Introduction and Story
In the yakuza world, one name still rings fear to all those who hear it, The Immortal Tatsu. However, that legend began to fade away as Tatsu suddenly vanished from the yakuza lifestyle and took on a new job…the ever tough househusband role! Tatsu has gone from beating convicts and lowlifes to trying to beat sales prices! Adapting to this new job has definitely been a challenge for Tatsu but it’s a job he does with pride as he tries to support his hardworking wife Miku. Can Tatsu escape his dark past or more importantly…can Tatsu reach the grocery store before all the good produce is gone!?
A Yakuza Past, A Househusband’s Future
Tatsu’s journey to being the best husband ever is easily the best element to The Way of the Househusband. Every time Tatsu steps outside of his house—or lets anyone in—he ends up somehow finding trouble in the strangest ways but these various challenges are usually met with comical solutions. Tatsu runs into his old allies/enemies and despite how scary he was as The Immortal Tatsu, this new Tatsu is just a tough guy trying to be a caring husband and that is comedic gold! Tatsu might not be the most relatable protagonist ever but his various trials and tribulations as a new husband can be seen as similar to those who live that married life style!
Short but Constantly Laugh Inducing
You might find yourself sighing when you see that The Way of the Househusband is not only 17 mins per episode—less if you count the opening and closing—but also only 5 episodes but this might work out for the series overall. The Way of the Househusband constantly made us crack up and that is rare for a comedy anime. In our opinions, the short episode count/length gives the series just enough time to hit you with a good joke or gag and that was a true surprise. So yes, The Way of the Househusband is short but this is more of a blessing than a curse.
[ad_middle class="mt40"]Daily Life Struggles Done Perfectly
Again, saying that Tatsu’s past is relatable might be a bit of a stretch but you have to admit, what he goes through daily as a husband is. The Way of the Househusband isn’t aiming jokes at teenagers or younger viewers but those who have gone off and now have to deal with the world as an adult. Trying to budget money, find time to be with your significant other, and aiming to be a good adult are just a few problems Tatsu faces and we can say those issues are what we deal with constantly as young adults ourselves. The jokes and odd problems Tatsu faces might not make every kid laugh but if you've entered the shoes of the strange Tatsu in the real world, we bet you’ll be laughing as you go “ohhh I know that feeling”.
Strange Animation/Art Choice
Here is without a doubt the biggest issue we had with The Way of the Househusband, the weird semi-still frame animation/art style. Characters in The Way of the Househusband don’t move like normal animation and are almost visual novel-like as they sometimes show movement but other times just barely move. Equally, the art for the show can look incredibly basic as if this was a studio’s first anime which if you know J.C.Staff—creators of Toradora! and Food Wars to name a few shows—this isn’t their first rodeo in the anime world. Sadly, The Way of the Househusband's animation will no doubt turn off many anime viewers and that is a shame as we loved the character designs this series has. Just everything else looks pretty…meh.
5 Episodes…
Okay…we did say that the short episode length wasn’t a bad thing but let’s face it…we need more! Only five episodes isn’t enough as we want to continue down this strange married life of Tatsu and Miku. We are praying Netflix will release more episodes of The Way of the Househusband at a later date as 5 episodes are just not enough!
Final Thoughts
Despite how short The Way of the Househusband is—and let's again say it’s a short series—we can’t stop wanting more and wishing everyone would give this anime a chance! Tatsu and his various “friends” are silly and downright goofballs. The Way of the Househusband might also look…quite bizarre but we can forgive that for how amazing the jokes are and how simple the series as a whole really is. Overall, short, funny, and sweet are just a few words that describe The Way of the Househusband perfectly and you’re doing yourself an injustice if you don’t boot up Netflix and watch this anime now!
