TONIKAWA, while not being the most imaginative of its comedy/romance genre, delivered exactly what it promised; lots of laughs and touching moments. A seemingly simple love story with a supernatural secret, TONIKAWA gives us that special doki-doki feeling that is so helpful in these trying times! Especially for those of us holed up, imagining a super cute new roommate/love interest can make us forget the direness of our situations. Sometimes it’s just nice to skip over the drama of unspoken feelings and witness that ‘happily ever after’ we crave! For those who dream of meeting that sudden fated someone and interested in co-habituating comedy, here are 6 anime like TONIKAWA!

The main characters of Jingai-san no Yome have some striking differences from Nasa and Tsukasa, with Tomori as a high school boy and Kanenogi as a fluffy monster-creature thing. But they share the sudden marriage and living together aspect that makes both anime so interesting! More characters share screen time than in TONIKAWA even though the episodes are shorter. Tomori and Kanenogi’s sudden feelings for each other combined with learning how to live under one roof provides many laughs and touching moments similar to TONIKAWA while being more on the absurd side. But with Tsukasa’s mysterious origins, she may not be so different from the strange Kanenogi!

Fated lovers, the rebellious Ui and serious Hayato honor a drunken promise made by their parents for the two to marry. It’s no surprise that there are a lot of ups and downs in high schoolers being on the student council yet trying to keep the school from learning about their relationship! My Wife is the Student Council President is a hornier version of TONIKAWA with more initial pushback to the relationship. Both Nasa and Hayato are very capable guys who can take care of themselves but find themselves at a loss when it comes to their fiancé/wife. Ui may not be as impressive in the housework department as Tsukasa is but shares her determination to be a good partner. A sudden, serious romantic relationship with a couple that is so inexperienced creates a lot of uncomfortable but hilarious moments much like in TONIKAWA! It may lack some in character development and be much much more ecchi, but it does give you an easily digestible story with a super cute and willing wife that’s hard to understand.

    3. Kanojo Okarishimasu (Rent-a-Girlfriend)

While not a ‘real’ relationship, Rent-a-Girlfriend and TONIKAWA have a lot in common! If you love a perfect heroine, look no further than Chizuru who, like Tsukasa, can do it all while being the cutest girl you know! To protect their secret, Chizuru has to endure a lot of what the TONIKAWA couple does like meeting the family, hanging out with eccentric friends, and changing much of their lives to accommodate the other. While more for the sake of rules than respect, Chizuru and Kazuya don’t do much physically and their relationship is more expressed in words similarly to the relationship in TONIKAWA. The couples’ circumstances are shocking to their respective friends and family in both anime and that is about as much drama as you are forced to endure besides a certain blond antagonist! Both shows are hilarious and really make you think about what it means to love another.

If you liked how adorable both Tsukasa and Nasa are, you’ll love Yuki and her boyfriend Momo! Both are absolute cuties and there’s so much that will make you ‘AWW’ out loud! Yuki is much like Nasa in the way they relentlessly comment on how cute their partner is. It sounds so surface-level but when you hear what specific things they find cute, you understand better that their feelings are not shallow. Also, both Nasa and Yuki share a strange fetish for snapping pictures of their love interest. With both couples happily coming together in the beginning despite not knowing each other well, you get to enjoy their relationship blossoming over the course of the show. There are many hurdles they overcome in learning about each other though Yuki has the leg up having stalked her crush for so long. Then again, Nasa changed his whole life’s course to one day see Tsukasa again so he’s not much saner. While it doesn’t make much sense in either case, it’s lots of fun watching Yuki and Momo grow closer despite their shyness much in the way we enjoyed Tsukasa and Nasa growing ever closer. It is also sure to make you laugh especially with Yuki’s over-zealous stalking!

    5. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai)

It’s not romance that brings our main characters Sakuta and Mai together, but a shared and secret pain. Despite such a gap in how they come together, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl and TONIKAWA have a lot of similar circumstances. The drama is heavier for sure with dry humor and the main characters are like perfect opposites of Tsukasa and Nasa. While Tsukasa and Nasa are blushing, shy lovers, Sakuta and Mai share a bold indifference and say what they like not caring about how the other will take it. This unreserved banter actually brings them closer as they don’t get caught up in impressions, allowing their true selves to shine through. Mai isn’t Sakuta’s wife but she has to depend on Sakuta in many of the ways Tsukasa relies on Nasa. Because she’s invisible to others, they must buy groceries together and Sakuta even has to buy Mai clothes (though that scene isn’t as drawn out as it is in TONIKAWA.) Early on, the unlikely couple even shares a bed together and has to get used to sharing a small room just as Tsukasa and Nasa did at the beginning of their series. There’s a much more obvious supernatural theme going on but also doesn’t readily reveal its secrets!

    6. Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san (The Helpful Fox Senko-San)

    [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="ZMBZ-13291" text="" url="" ]
    [en][information_general item1 = "Episodes" content1="12" item2="Aired" content2="April 2019 – June 2019" post_id=""][/en]
    [es][information_general item1 = "Episodios" content1="___content1___" item2="Emisión" content2="___content2___" post_id=""][/es]

Senko-san is an 800-year-old fox deity with a somewhat secret connection to the stressed and overworked salaryman Nakano. Senko has her work cut out for her but seems to really treasure her role as Nakano’s wife-mom, a term he does not much care for. Like Tsukasa, Senko takes over the cleaning and cooking and also has some supernatural connections we don’t immediately understand. Nasa and Nakano both of them care deeply for and are extremely grateful to their partners despite being so spoiled every day. Both girls seem to just love taking care of the guys even though they are sometimes put off by the guys’ desire to touch them. The paces of The Helpful Fox Senko-san and TONIKAWA are very similar with two people suddenly moving in together and going about a happy every-day life. Both men are obsessed with the girls’ cuteness though Nakano’s fixation is more on the fluffiness of Senko’s tail than her girly appearance. The joy you feel watching the characters enjoy a good meal or go shopping together or just bask in each other’s’ company is very reminiscent of TONIKAWA.

    Final Thoughts

Lovey-dovey shows where the drama is in deepening the relationship instead of events leading up to the relationship may not be as dramatic but they sure do feel good! Rather than the ‘will they, won’t they’ dilemma, these shows focus on HOW will they overcome. The absurdity of two people who don’t know each other suddenly devoting themselves to each other as partners or lovers makes for great comedy as well. And of course, seeing couples suddenly living and spending lots of time together in anime as many people are finding themselves these days is relatable in a cute and uplifting way. What cute anime have matched the overflowing moe of TONIKAWA in your eyes? Let us know in the comments!
